Allegory of the cave

The different ways people are deceived by media and movies, in my opinion are distractions for people to know what is happening in the world around them. Most people use media as a source of knowledge. In this era there are many people who have become influences for others just by showing their lifestyle. In “Plato: The Allegory of the Cave” the prisoners only know one way of living. It is set where one prisoner is set free to observe the world around him knowing that shadows are his reality. In the writing it is said “He would be able to look upon the sun itself and see its true nature, not by reflections in water or phantasms of it is an alien setting”. My analysis to this quote is how the prisoner perceives this new world he was brought into, and questioning his reality within the cave. This new knowledge and knowing beyond his beliefs just shows how much fiction is mistaken for reality. People in today’s society still question what they believe in, knowing what they have been told since childhood puts us in a spot of fiction vs reality. It makes me question how well we use our media to our knowledge and how we learn from these influences. In Plato’s Cave the prisoners have been there since childhood which leads them to their reality of shadows and echoes. The possibility of the physical world not being reality is a concerning topic. How do we look at life and what motive do we have to keep moving forward with knowledge? If the physical world wasn’t our reality we would not have a concern or belief in our everyday life. I believe our physical world is reality. The possibility of the physical world not being reality is questionable, because when we are born this is all we know and we have no knowledge of the world being a fake reality.

William James, “The Will to Believe”

The characteristics of live, forced, and momentous; it is explained to be a option of choice. In William James writing he explains for a option to be live or dead. For a option to be live you must want to do that option with no forced intention. The dead option is you have no reason to do the option for any reason. The forced option is to choose between two options. Willam James also explores the non-forced option, where you are given two options, then choose not to answer at all or choose to give a different option instead of the two original answers. The momentous option is only in use when it is a once in a life time opportunity.

Examples of Live, Forced, Momentous:

Be in a society who believes in God or in free will.

Stay home or leave.

I have to jump this cliff to or get eaten by lions.

The belief that fits all three is explained in the writing as a “genuine” choice. This happens when it meets the three options live, forced, and momentous.

In William james writing he agrees with William Clifford’s standards of beliefs. In his writing he states “So Clifford’s exhortation has throughly a fantastic sound”. They are both arguing about the difference of belief.

I agree with both James and Clifford because in ways James makes a statement of having your own free will to believe in something. Clifford believes not having enough evidence makes it hard to believe in anything at all. In reality both arguments are true and makes sense in most situations of life. Having evidence makes it easier to make decisions, on the other hand you have the choice to make those decisions. In the religious situation many people are forced into that life and without evidence or choice there would be no society to live by and it causes chaos.

William Clifford’s The Ethics of Belief

William Clifford’s arguments

1.Believing something is true; it cant be accepted without factual evidence.

2.Its wrong to assume with no evidence in any situation.

C:Not having the right evidence and continues to move forward, moves forward with uncertainty; also disregarding if the outcomes are wrong.

I believe the argument is sound and valid. It is said that it is wrong to agree with something without the right evidence in the text. I believe the argument to be sound because each premise is true and makes the conclusion true. For example Loch ness monster is known in many places of the world because people say they seen in at the lake loch ness and have had movies made by it; this argument cant be proven wrong without proper evidence just like any animal. Which means all beliefs are claims and unjustified beliefs leads to harm. Trying to prove anything with concluding evidence can make your argument wrong and also leads to wrong outcomes. Not having the proper evidence can hurt the person’s claim, and the supporting claim. The example is the man’s boat; without evidence he sailed without the right information and that the boat was able to sail. He put many peoples lives on the line and it was wrong for him to use bad information. The man could’ve looked at the evidence and known something was wrong with the boat; without this logical explanation he put many people in danger and that was the wrong thing to do. Therefore having the wrong evidence can mean the source could be dangerous to you and your surroundings.

I apply this to my life everyday. I make sure I am careful in anything I do and my surroundings are secure and the people around me are safe. Thus making sure I am careful and the people around me are secure.

The thesis makes sense as in how people need evidence to make sure anything is correct. This could be used to prove arguments are wrong and have practical significance. Without fallacies Clifford’s reasoning can lead anyone to the right conclusion.

Injustice

The perspective of injustice can be unfair and can lead to unfortunate events.

Words and actions taken without thinking of consequences and impact of the other party.

The perspective of words and actions taken without thinking of consequences can be unfair and lead to unfortunate events.

One day I was going into the store. I witnessed a homeless man being pushed out of the store by store security. Because of the way he looked or by the clothes he had on. This an example of injustice. Just because he was homeless he was pushed away from society, this can be cruel and unfair.
